Judging of the 231 entries submitted for this year’s WINE magazine Top 10 Sauvignon Blanc competition is set to run over three days at parent company Ramsaymedia’s offices in Pinelands. The panel completed the first batch of 78 wines at 14h45 this afternoon, way too late to head for a plate of spaghetti vongole at nearby Italian restaurant Magica Roma, the kitchen closed for lunch from 14h00.
Instead a burger at Joe Fish, purveyor of hearty grub from seafood to burgers that’s not half-bad. The wine list however is dead ordinary so what to drink?
Luckily, Pieter de Waal, Sauvignon Blanc Interest Group secretary and a member of this year’s panel dabbles in some winemaking himself. He was en route to drop off a case to retailer in town but was happy to deplete his stocks for a worthy cause. His Hermit on the Hill Syrah 2007 is made from grapes grown on Coleraine in Paarl and vinified at the same venue. It shows pure dark fruit, typical varietal pepper and great freshness. In addition , the oak appears well judged, De Waal’s offhand observation being that he could never afford new barrels. Total production was 3 000 bottles and a bargain at R65 a bottle (recommended retail price).
