Hogan Chenin Blanc 2015

Good deportment.

Does the poise that Jocelyn Hogan Wilson gets on her Chenin Blanc come from the fact that the Swartland vineyard she sources fruit from is southeast facing and therefore cooler rather than hotter? It must surely help.

The 2015 vintage (approximate retail price: R265 a bottle) seems even more refined that the impressive 2014 that was her own-label debut. On the nose, there’s a note of dried flowers before stone fruit, a hint of ginger and a touch of spice. The palate has plenty of concentrated fruit but also lovely freshness while the finish is long and gently savoury. Deftly done.

#WinemagRating: 93/100.

Hogan also has a red blend from the 2015 vintage called Divergent. A blend of 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Cinsaut and 34% Carignan, the wine arose out of Hogan’s exposure to the wines of Chateau Musar presented by the late Serge Hochar at the Swartland Revolution in 2014.

The nose shows red fruit, some floral character, fynbos and spice. The palate is medium bodied with lots of juicy fruit, fresh acidity and soft tannins. A cheerful drop now, it may well become more complex with time in the bottle. Approximate retail price: R295 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 90/100.
