Huis van Chevalerie Filia Chenin Blanc Brut Nature 2015

Rank outsider.

Top Swartland grower Christa von La Chevallerie also makes an accomplished bubbly from Chenin Blanc, the current-release 2015 proudly bearing the Certified Heritage Vineyards seal as devised by the Old Vine Project, the vineyard in question planted in 1974.

Kept on the lees for 18 months and featuring zero dosage, the nose shows citrus, peach and just the right amount of aldehydic biscuit-like character. The palate, meanwhile, has good fruit concentration, bright acidity and a creamy mousse while the finish is long and savoury. It’s complex, well balanced and all the more fascinating that it’s not from traditionally Champenoise grapes. Price: R450 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.

Friends kindly shared a bottle with me just before Christmas and we all thoroughly enjoyed, enhanced by the beautiful Paternoster sunset
