Quite a few commentators are saying that 2014 wasn’t the greatest for Sauvignon Blanc, something borne out by the fact that only three of the wines from this vintage appear in the recently announced FNB Sauvignon Blanc Top 10.
What of the 2014 vintage of The Outlier Sauvignon Blanc from Jordan in Stellenbosch (R105 a bottle)? The 2012 won the trophy for the best wooded Sauvignon Blanc and I remember it as a wine of real finesse.
The 2014, fermented and matured for eight months in 225-ltre barrels, is all too easy to drink but perhaps short of some detail. The predominant character is white peach but there’s also a lime and a little pyrazine dustiness in evidence. Good fruit concentration, coated acidity and the oak really well integrated. Precisely made as you’d expect from this cellar but not quite as elegant and refined as 2012.
