Annus mirabilis.

“Specially bottled to celebrate a remarkable vintage for red wine” reads the front label of this special release Cabernet Franc 2017 from Stellenbosch property Kaapzicht and we should all be jolly glad they did. The nose shows red and black fruit to go with violets and just the right amount of the variety’s trademark leafy, herbaceous aromatics. The palate is wonderfully composed with well-defined fruit, vibrant acidity and fine-grained tannins. There’s a lovely coolness about the wine without it being too lean. Total production: 1 200 bottles – available from the tasting room only at R220 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 94/100.

    Hi Christian,

Any idea why this wine was released? Understood that 2017 produced some stellar wines, however if these grapes were incredible – why didn’t they go into the flagship rather than selling at a lower price point in a varietal wine? Throwing the flagship blend out of balance?

    Thank you.

Hi Kevin R, I get the feeling that Danie Steytler Jnr simply couldn’t contain himself when he saw how good fruit quality was in 2017 – I rated the Cape Bdx blend that is Pentagon from the same vintage 93, so not that far off the pace and available in significantly bigger quantities.
