Karo Brandy XO

By , 10 December 2019

On posing the following question on Twitter recently, “Not being a millionaire quite yet but enjoying a good digestif, and with a view to washing down Xmas pudding, mince pies, cheese or whatever over the next six weeks, what’s the best value 5, 10 or 12-Year-Old Brandy around?”, I was met with not just plenty of good advice (see here) but also two samples, reviewed below.

On fire.

Karo Brandy XO

From Colombar grown on Gerald and Carol Philips’s smallholding in Barrydale. Matured for 13 years in barrel and blended by Master Distiller Kobus Gelderblom at Oude Molen Distillery. Amber in colour. Citrus, apricot, a hint of vanilla and spice on the nose. The palate is rich and pleasantly thick textured with layers of flavour. Recommended retail price: R699.95 per 500ml bottle with gift box.

Ladismith 8 Year Old Cape Brandy

From Klein Karoo grapes. Light in colour, the nose displays some caramel and spice but little fruitiness. The palate is smooth and seemingly not too fiery making for an elegant drop. Recommended retail price: R399 per 500ml bottle.
