Kloovenburg Shiraz 2008 vs. Zoetendal Shiraz 2008
By Christian Eedes, 17 March 2011
Two examples of Shiraz, each sitting at different ends of the stylistic spectrum. The Kloovenburg being from the warm Swartland was rich and broad, featuring plenty of dark fruit; the Zoetendal from cool Elim was more medium bodied with red fruit and pepper. Detractors of the Kloovenburg might say that it displays an over-ripe character and lacks verve; detractors of the Zoetendal would probably observe that it is excessively green. Both wines have appeal but at R107 a bottle for the Kloovenburg and R90 for the Zoetendal, I thought both could have done with just a bit more focus and finesse.
