Following a tasting of new releases under the KWV The Mentors label on Tuesday, lunch at Harvest, chef Matthew Gordon’s restaurant on Paarl wine farm Laborie. The last wine to be served: KWV Hanepoot Jerepigo 1973. Brown with a pale green rim, the wine showed aromas and flavours of caramel, honey and nuts. How to judge wines of such advanced age? To be hyper-critical, I thought it was particularly evolved and a bit flat. It won a bronze medal at the 2011 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show and that’s probably spot on.
