Lammershoek Reserve Syrah 2015

Flying high.

What would become of Swartland property Lammershoek was sold by the fouding Kretzel family to German investors? Schalk Opperman, previously of Holden Manz in Franschhoek, took over as winemaker in time for the 2015 harvest and as there’s every indication that the property is in good hands – the Terravinum Reserve White rated 95 on the 100-point quality scale in the Cape White Blend Report while a recent bottle of the Reserve Syrah 2015 also impressed.

It was vinified in a combination of older barrels, foudre and concrete tanks and matured for 11 months. On the nose, red and black fruit, fynbos, spice and white pepper plus a hint of olive brine. The palate, meanwhile, displays a good core of fruit, snappy acidity and pleasantly grippy tannins, the finish long and savoury. Neither too slight nor too weighty. Price: R185  a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 93/100.
