Old-vine Semillon from Franschhoek really is something special – think Boekenhoutskloof, Alheit La Colline and, of course, Landau du Val, the 2014 vintage from the latter launched yesterday.
From a block certified as having been planted in 1905, it was made by Wynand Grobler of Rickety Bridge, who tells of a particularly adventurous approach to this vintage – 10% of the final wine derived from one 500-litre barrel fermented whole bunch and left on the skins for six months, maturation lasting 12 months in total.
The nose shows hay, peach and apple, citrus peel, a slight nuttiness and a touch of spice. The palate is rich and full with nicely coated acidity and a gently savoury finish – a good core of fruit to go with intriguing oxidative character. Approximate retail price: R350 a bottle.
