Le Sueur Kluisenaar Chenin Blanc 2018

By , 21 November 2019

Far from the madding crowd.

“It’s a small block on shale in Meiringspoort. In between the cliffs. It’s quite special – basically the only place in the Karoo that still has water,” says winemaker Louis van der Riet of the site that supplies grapes for his Le Sueur Kluisenaar Chenin Blanc.

The current-release 2018 is an immensely rewarding drop. Top notes of dried herbs and hay before yellow peach and naartjie plus a talcum powder-like note on the nose while the palate is lean but not too much so, a good core of fruit to go with tangy acidity, the finish long and pithy.  Price: R175 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 94/100.

Paradoks, meanwhile, sees Van der Riet combining the parents of Pinotage, Pinot Noir sourced from Elgin and Cinsault from the Swartland in the case of the 2018. A hint of reduction as well as some floral fragrance, cranberry and red cherry on the nose before a palate that is light and fresh, the finish slightly bitter, this a curious but not off-putting quality. Price: R220 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 89/100.
