Lowerland Tolbos Tannat 2016

Not your usual “dry red”.

Jancis Robinson terms Tannat a “tannic monster” while winemaker Lukas van Loggerenberg says it’s got “ballas”. The Lowerland Tolbos 2016 as crafted by Van Loggerenberg from grapes grown by friend Bertie Coetzee on his farm in Prieska, Norther Cape is, however, not nearly as intimidating as the above descriptions might lead you to think.

Aromatically, it shows red and black fruit plus quite heady notes of purple flowers and fresh herbs. The palate shows good fruit concentration, moderate acidity and surprisingly soft tannins given that it was 100% whole bunch fermented. A conversation starter rather than a show-stopper. Price: R300 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 89/100.
