MAN Vintners Chenin Blanc 2011

By , 4 June 2012

MAN Vintners is a partnership between Jose Condé of Stark- Condé and Tyrell and Philip Myburgh of Joostenberg, the “M” standing for Marie, wife of Jose, the “A” for Anette, wife of Tyrrel and the “N” for Nicky, wife of Philip. From 500 cases when they started out in 2001, production is now 175 000 cases a year with exports to 25 countries.

What are they getting right? The MAN Vintners Chenin Blanc 2011 from dryland bush vines in Agter-Paarl offers great quality relative to value. For R49 a bottle (or R70 a bottle on the Joostenberg bistro winelist), you get a wine with great fruit concentration and fresh acidity. Still remarkably primary, it has stacks of guava, apple and pear flavour. Not hugely complex but honest and unfussy. Score: 15.5/20.
