The process of rejuvenation which the Nederburg Auction is undergoing continues in dramatic fashion – 11 941.5 litres worth just over R7 million compared to 12 448.50 litres worth R4.4 million last year, which amounts to a 68.5% increase in price per litre.
How to explain this? As of last year, the organisers cut volumes available for sale significantly (there were some 25 000 litres of wine on sale in 2012) as well as introducing a much tougher selection process – a 10-person panel of local and international wine industry professionals selected 111 wines from 314 submitted this year.
South Africa accounted for 69.3% of sales compared to 63.1% in 2013 and the top three buyers were Tsogo Sun (10.3% of sales), Juric Imports and Exports (9.5%) and SPAR Group (8.1%). Dry white sold for an average of R424.81 per litre (or R318.60 per 750ml a bottle) and dry red for an average of R641.60 per litre (or R481.20 per 750ml bottle).
