A little Mourvèdre in a blend tends to go a long way and that’s again the case in the Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Granum 2012, which sees 12% of the variety combined with 88% Shiraz, matured for 12 months in barrel, 21% new.
The thing about Mourvèdre is its strong gamey, almost animal scent in its youth and the Granum definitely shows some of this to go with black fruit, spice and earth. You can’t fault the wine for lack of flavour – it in fact appears quite dense and smooth textured with moderate acidity.
With time in the glass and some food on the plate, it started to show more delicacy – floral perfume and more red fruit on the palate. A year or two in bottle will surely be to its benefit. Approximate retail price: R235.
