    KWV Likeurwyn 1937:

    Production: 168 bottles
    Sugar: 220 grams
    PH: 4
    Alc.: 13.5 percent
Winemaker: AI Perold (according to “Die Burger” – 27/8/2003)
Tasting Note (Lars Torstenson): A very wonderful wine: complex , nutty, lots of honey on the nose, pleasing character of raisins, dried fruits en masse, well-balanced flavor and an absolutely stunning, long, nutty aftertaste.

Have to say I am more than a little surprised with some of the wines in the 70’s…especially the Shiraz! Littered with some of my faves. May explain the FdC winning wine? (I do need to taste it though). I can’t even ascribe a style pref to the results given the high ratings for both Saxenburg and Flagstone, both of which I rate highly as well.
    Curiouser and curiouser!

Interesting to note: the Waterford Estate 2012 Cab gets bronze, while claiming the highest score (93) in your Cab report, Christian. Also the Steenberg Black Swan Sauvignon Blanc 2013 – bronze, but dominates Concours Mondial du Sauvignon 2015! It also seems that pretty much every wine entered received a bronze (if it didn’t score higher)? No doubt, there are some absolute pearlers placed amongst the riffraff, but I’m just wondering if there’s any point dishing out so many bronzies?
Last year you made a comparison on the Platters 2014 and Old Mutual Trophy 2014, saying that it seemed the Platters 2014 judges favored bold and powerful wines, while the Old Mutual 2014 top scorers seemed far more light and elegant in approach. What’s your opinion on the weight or lack there-of of this years top scorers?

      Christian Eedes | 1 June 2015

Hi Lloyd, First of all, I should point out that I did not officiate as a Trophy Wine Show judge this year so can’t really comment on the particular aesthetic which applied – every time a panel gathers to taste, even when the individuals involved are used to working together, a different dynamic is at play depending on the issues of day.

That said, I think there is more overlap than not between Trophy Wine Show and what I’m doing – Spier Woolworths The Hutton Single Vineyard 2012 which was Best Cab at Trophy Wine Show was 4.5 Stars in the Cab Report 2014 while Rustenberg Peter Barlow 2009 which won the International Judges’ Trophy was 5 Stars. Best white overall at Trophy Wine Show, namely Morgenster White 2013, was 5 Stars in the RisCura White Hot Wine Awards to name but one other example. Thanks in large part to Michael Fridjhon and his annual Wine Judging Academy, a small but significant group of tasters is emerging in South Africa who have a clear understanding of what’s at stake in the world of fine wine and are able to make meaningful judgements accordingly…

Regarding the issue of the number of bronzes, I don’t think there are too many at all – to my mind, a bronze equates to a rating of 3 – 3.5 Stars (which might be defined as “characterful and appealing”) and given the quality gains the industry has made in recent times, there are now more rather than less of these sort of wines.

        Lloyd | 1 June 2015

Thanks for your reply Christian. Yes definitely some overlap, and I’m not surprised by the Morgenster White 2013. Seeing the full scores now – I’ve got LC (loser-complex) for some of those 70’s (some 80’s too). Perhaps the majority vintages are to blame? A lot less Golds this year (12, compared to last years 30). Michael and his minions are hardcore!! Tough on Pinotage, and mean about our Shiraz. DeWaal top if the pops! ?!”Where are you Spoinkop? Where are you Mount Southerland? We needed you.”

    Hennie Taljaard | 28 May 2015

I’m rushing to my nearest store for that 94-point Fleur du Cap!! need to see if I agree with the judges!

    Kwispedoor | 27 May 2015

    Just a few thoughts, Christian:

Some really good wines, but – as always – the list of wines not getting any medals (or bronze only) will probably be pretty interesting indeed…

“Trophy for Best Museum Class White Blend
    Vergelegen G.V.B 2011 (Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon)”
Heheheh – that thing is still a baby!

“Trophy for Best Shiraz, Old Mutual Trophy for Best Red Wine Overall
    Fleur du Cap Shiraz 2013”
A bit of a surprise, I’d say. Probably worth investigating.

I generally find more value within the Secret Cellar range than within ranges like Oddbins.

KWV Likeurwyn 1937 – what on earth is this?

      Christian Eedes | 1 June 2015

Hi Kwispedoor, KWV chief winemaker Johann Fourie on the Likeurwyn 1937: “It is one of SA’s first botrytis wines (aka NLH). We’ve got a couple of wines like this with had written labels, all experimental lots done back then, varying in style from fortified to natural sweet wines.”

        Kwispedoor | 1 June 2015

Wow – a South African NLH, more than three quarters of a century old and apparently still good! Thanks, Christian.
