Spier Creative Block 5 2016

All in.

The Cape Bordeaux red blend that is Creative Block 5 from Spier is shaping as one of the more reliable wines in this style on the market – 92 for the 2013, 91 for the 2014 and 2015 and the current-release 2016 again impresses

It’s a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec sourced from both Darling and Stellenbosch, maturation lasting 18 months in French oak, 60% new.

The nose shows black fruit and some herbal character to go with pencil shavings and smoky, tarry notes while the palate is full bodied and smooth textured – sweet, dense fruit upfront before a long, dry finish (alcohol: 14.55%). Plenty of wow factor.

Editor’s rating: 92/100.
