The first bottle of Semillon 2008 from Constantia property Steenberg opened last night appeared both corked AND prematurely oxidised. Hashtag fail for cork as a closure, to use Twitter vernacular. The second bottle provided a curious drinking experience, the wine appearing neutral on both nose and palate. Not muted or stripped, just very subtle, nothing about it provoking very strong feelings. The nose showed hints of lime and thatch as well as some developed character, the palate was surprisingly light textured for the variety, the acidity soft and gentle. No particular flavour other than a little pyrazine bite on the finish. It may sound like I didn’t like the wine but I somehow found it quite comforting to drink. Score: 15.5/20.
