Stellenrust Old Bush Vine Cinsaut 2011
By Christian Eedes, 7 June 2013
Scrutinise this year’s Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show results and you’ll notice a Cinsaut 2011 from Stellenrust in Stellenbosch won a silver medal in the “best niche red varieties” class.
Though Cinsaut plantings have declined dramatically over the last 10 years, there was still more of it planted than Pinot Noir at the end of 2012 (1 936ha vs. 1089ha respectively) and with the hotshot Swartland winemakers and now Stellenrust’s Tertius Boshoff championing it, it hopefully won’t remain niche for long.
The 2011 from Stellenrust (R80 a bottle) shows strawberry, spice and some earthiness. In structure, it’s medium bodied with relatively soft acidity and tannins. Not hugely complex or intricate but really easy to drink.
