Swerwer Red 2016

New and improved.

Whereas previous vintage of Swerwer as made by Jasper Wickens consisted of Cinsaut, Grenache and Syrah, the 2016 sees the Syrah replaced by Tinta Barocca, the precise break-down being 48% Cinsaut, 40% Grenache and 12% Tinta Barocca.

I’m not sure there’s a radical difference in the end-result although the 2016 is perhaps a little sturdier, the fruit a little more forward. The nose is quite heady with notes of cherries, plums, fynbos and spice while the palate displays good depth of flavour, lovely freshness and firm but not astringent tannins. Wine Cellar price: R200 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 92/100.
