Swerwer Red 2017

Aerodynamic.

When Jasper Wickens opted to combine Tinta Barocca instead of Syrah with Cinsault and Grenache to make the 2016 vintage of his red blend under the Swerwer label, it appeared he’d sacrificed elegance for Swartland authenticity.

Tinta Barocca again features in the 2017 but this time it seems like an inspired move – lending just the right amount of heft to the Cinsault and Grenache which occasionally make for quite skinny wines.   Consisting of 50% Cinsault, 42% Grenache and 8% Tinta to be precise, the nose shows cherry, pomegranate, herbs and spice while the palate is light yet concentrated with bright acidity and fine, relatively soft tannins. Not too grippy or earthy, it’s a serious wine that’s also entirely smashable. Aproximate retail price: R195 a bottle.

The Chenin Blanc 2017 under the Swerwer label is also a very well judged affair. On the nose, notes of citrus, white peach, fresh herbs and hay. The palate has good depth and density of fruit, tangy acidity and a savoury, slightly bitter finish. It’s balanced and age-worthy and terrific value at around R170 a bottle.

    One of my favourite wines. Never miss a vintage. I agree with you Christian that the Red is slightly better than the White (well that’s my preference), although most other commentators score the white better. the 2017s really show the vintage and is still tight and deserve some bottle time.

      I agree with Hennie that the red is better than his chenin in just about every vintage. And with chenin of such high quality, it says something indeed about the red! These are high-end wines and I’m grateful that they are mercifully priced so that mere mortals can also buy and enjoy them!
