The First XI The Partnership 2014

Entertaining knock.

In 2013, Proteas cricketers Faf du Plessis and AB de Villiers came together with Stephen Fleming formerly of New Zealand and Mike Hussey, formerly of Australia to form Infinity Wines, maiden releases being a Rhône-style blend called The First XI The Belter 2014 (reviewed here) and a Merlot-driven wine called The First XI The Partnership 2014.

Winemaker is Wynand Grobler of Rickety Bridge and the wine consists of 75% Franschhoek Merlot, 8% Franschhoek Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Wellington Shiraz, maturation lasting 22 months in French oak, 30% new.

On the nose, red and black fruit, some floral fragrance and a hint of spice. There’s plenty of ripe fruit on the palate but also good freshness and very much to the wine’s credit, there’s very little oak-derive character in evidence. Great fun to drink. Rickety Bridge price: R230 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 87/100.
