The Innings Sauvignon Blanc 2012
By Christian Eedes, 16 October 2012
Watching the Kolkata Knight Riders versus the Auckland Aces at Newlands last night, I had hoped to toast another scintillating innings by the Knight Riders’ Jacques Kallis with his own wine, but he was out for a second-ball duck, caught Lou Vincent, bowled Azhar Mahmood.
The Innings is the label produced by Robertson property Rietvallei in conjunction with cricketers Mark Boucher and Jacques Kallis. There are two wines, a Sauvignon Blanc 2012 selling for R50 a bottle and a Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 selling for R65 a bottle.
I like the Sauvignon Blanc – it’s at the greener end of the flavour spectrum with racy acidity and offers good quality relative to price (score: 15/20). The Cab is relatively soft and sweet for my taste (score: 14.5/20) but probably has the right stylistics for the market segment it’s aimed at…
We were being hosted in the hospitality suite of Big Sports Management, the company that represents Boucher among other players. The likes of Graeme Smith and Dale Steyn were in attendance drinking what looked suspiciously like brandy and coke while the WAGS typically opted for the white with lots of ice.
