The Old Vine Series Soldaat 2016

Stand easy.

By winemaker Eben Sadie’s own admission, the drought of 2016 caused this Piekenierskloof vineyard of Grenache to ripen slightly more than usual. The result is more black fruit than usual – mulberry, bramble and a certain olive-like quality to go with top notes of scrub and purple flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with lemon-like acidity and fine tannins, the finish suitably savoury. Well observed given the challenges of the vintage but perhaps not quite as captivating as the excellent 2015. Approximate retail price: R310 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 92/100.
