Thistle & Weed Brandnetel Chenin Blanc 2017

R&D project.

Viticultural consultant Etienne Terblanche and winemaker Stephanie Wiid of Thistle & Weed, whose approach is to seek out interesting pockets of vineyard from around the winelands, recently launched a new wine the form of Brandnetel Chenin Blanc 2017.

Grapes from a 0.3ha trial vineyard planted in 1980 with no less than 32 different rootstocks and vinification involved spontaneous fermentation in old barrels before 50% of the wine was matured in tank and the other 50% in barrel for eight months.

The nose shows pear, apple and peach, a touch of earth and some spice while the palate is quite lean (alcohol is 12.5%) with bright acidity and a pithy finish. A wine of understated elegance. Approximate retail price: R275 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.
