How good can single-variety Sauvignon Blanc possibly be? Yesterday Tokara’s Miles Mossop presented his newly released Reserve Collection Elgin Sauvignon Blanc 2015 and you certainly had to admire it for its purity and focus but wouldn’t necessarily call it complex.
On the nose, a pleasant dustiness before notes of pear, lime and grapefruit. Concentrated fruit, lively acidity and a long, dry finish and no doubt many will get a great deal of pleasure in consuming it in the next six months. It’s R110 a bottle from the cellar and I rated it 90/100.
Mossop, however, laments that the market is so fixated with drinking Sauvingon Blanc young and to prove his point, served the 2008 of the same wine at lunch, which is was just that bit more rounded and complete.
A touch of reduction, lime marmalade, honey and dried herbs. Rich and thick textured making for nicely coated acidity. Poised and very satisfying to drink. Not every Sauvignon Blanc is going to get more interesting by virtue of time in bottle but choose carefully and there are benefits to be had.
