Val de Vie Ryk Neethling 2011

Going swimmingly.

Former Olympic swimming gold medallist is marketing director of luxury residential and polo estate Val de Vie in Paarl and needless to say, there’s a wine from the property honouring him.

The 2011 is a blend of 53% Shiraz, 16% Mourvèdre, 13% Carignan, 13% Grenache and 5% Cinsaut. It shows red fruit, spice and white pepper plus some more developed beef stock character. The palate, meanwhile, is already quite mellow but not unappealing and true to the broad idea of a Rhône blend. Price: R135 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 86/100.
