If Them Crooked Vultures, the alliance between Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Dave Grohl previously of Nirvana and now of Foo Fighters, and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin is a muso’s album, then Bordeaux-style red Vilafonté Series C 2006 is a winemaker’s wine.

Series C ‘06 is imposing (it had enough presence to rate 5 Stars in Platter’s 2010), technically correct and very polished. You have to admire how fresh it is despite the fact that it carries 15% abv (according to the back label) and how seamless the tannins are after a barrel maturation regime that involved 22 months in 95% new French oak but drinking it somehow isn’t as thrilling as you might hope. A bit like listening to some of the impenetrable riffing on Them Crooked Vultures.

Would go for a full-throttle Swartland blend with Them Crooked Vultures or perhaps a hulkingly balanced Cape Vintage Reserve 2005 from otherside the mountain! I must admit Mr Eedes your musical & wine tastes are hard to fault – a tip of the hat.
