Voetstoots 2016

Take it as you find it.

Voetstoots Chenin Blanc 2016 is a joint venture between Alexander Grier of Villiera and Michael Malan, understudy to JC Martin at Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge property Creation. Grapes were sourced from two old bush vine blocks of in Stellenbosch and fermentation occurred spontaneously before maturation lasting 10 months in old 500-litre barrels.

The nose shows top notes of hay and dried herbs before pear, citrus and white peach plus a subtle “wet wool” character.  The palate is relatively light bodied with clean fruit and fresh acidity before a pithy finish. It’s an elegant drop which may well gain extra complexity with time.  Price: R200 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.
