Vuurberg White 2013
By Christian Eedes, 1 August 2014
Donovan Rall has been winemaker at Stellenbosch winery Vuurberg since 2010 and has been quietly refining the wines since his arrival there. If the white blend under his own label is Swartland with a little bit of Stellenbosch, then that under the Vuurberg label is Stellenbosch with a little bit of Swartland – the 2013 being a blend of some 40% Chenin Blanc, the rest Semillon, Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Viognier and Verdelho.
It’s the most accomplished vintage yet, shedding some of the awkwardness of forerunners. Lime, green melon, white and yellow peach, a touch of thatch and some leesy character. Exuberant with lots of luscious fruit but not short of zing. Great value at R130 a bottle.
