Webersburg 2013

No frills.

The 2013 vintage of the Bordeaux-style red blend from Helderberg property Webersburg was made by the accomplished Matthew van Heerden – he left Uva Mira to head up the cellar here after marrying the owner’s daughter although now that he is general manager of Grande Provence in Franschhoek, it remains to be seen what kind of involvement he will have going forward.

The wine is a blend of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon, matured for 22 months in 300-litre barrels, 70% new. It shows more red than black fruit plus a subtle herbal note on the nose while the palate is medium bodied with good freshness and remarkably well integrated oak. Made with admirable restraint (alcohol is a relatively modest 13.5%), it’s charming to drink. Price: R165 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 89/100.
