Lauren says: “What would be good enough to drink with dinner after WINE magazine’s Bordeaux-style tasting on Tuesday night was a conundrum. Since our teeth were already stained with the tannic remains of South Africa’s finest including De Toren Fusion V 2007, it was pointless chickening out and going for a sauvignon blanc. So, looking for some nosh, WINE journo Jeanri-Tine van Zyl and myself headed to Carlyles in Vredehoek armed with a bottle of Maison Shiraz 2009, a recent purchase from Chris Weylandt’s newly opened Franschhoek tasting room. This full bodied wine had legs like a racehorse, and a nose like the cologne of a young Italian lover. It smelt expensive – but maybe that was just the wood. With its sweet entry and juicy finish, this wine is like a genie and will benefit from some more time in the bottle. But it did go down perfectly with the chorizo and mushroom pizza and beat the service levels like Pocket Power at a J&B Met.”
