The Wildehurst cellar is situated in the Swartland village of Koringberg and it is here that Sheree Nothnagel makes an array of characterful, well-priced wines. Tasting notes and ratings for the current releases as follows:

Velo Blanc 2016
Approximate retail price: R67.50
53% Colomabar, 28% Viognier, 19% Chenin Blanc, the first two varieties fermented in tank and the latter in old oak. Citrus, stone fruit and some waxy character on the nose while the palate is surprisingly rich and full given an alcohol of just 12%. Not super-refined but flavourful and fresh.

Editor’s rating: 89/100.

Wildehurst Chenin Blanc 2016
Approximate retail price: R148.50
From a 30-year-old Paardeberg vineyard. Matured for six months in old oak. Aromas and flavours of citrus, yellow peach and apricot plus spice. The palate is well balanced – juicy fruit, creamy texture, nicely coated acidity. Typical of the area. Alcohol: 13%.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.

Velo Red 2014
Approximate price: R94.50
67% Grenache, 33% Shiraz. Matured for 18 months in old oak. Red and black fruit, dried herbs, pepper and a slight meatiness. The palate rich and a little sweet with soft tannins – alcohol: 14.5%.

Editor’s rating: 87/100.

Wildehurst Cinsault 2017
Approximate retail price: R190
Matured for 10 months in old oak. The nose shows a floral top note before red cherry, herbs and spice while the palate is marked by clearly defined fruit, bright acidity and no tannins to speak of. Nicely assembled and very appealing. Alcohol: 13.5%.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.

Wildehurst Red 2014
Approximate retail price: R190
61% Shiraz, 23% Mourvèdre, 13% Viognier, 3% Cinsault, the Shiraz and Viognier from owner Joanne Hurst’s own garden vineyard, these co-fermented. Red fruit plus hints of peach, olive brine and spice. Broad with soft acidity and soft tannins. Not without flavour but lacks some structure and intricacy. Alcohol: 14%.

Editor’s rating: 87/100.

100% Nebbiolo sourced from the Breedekloof. Matured for 10 months in old oak. The nose shows roses and red cherry with a sort of plasticene-like quality adding interest. The palate is medium bodied, clean and fresh with fine, slightly spicy tannins. Is this classic Nebbiolo? No, not really but it is a bloody nice glass of red wine. Alcohol: 13.5%; total production: 216 bottles.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.
