Beaumont Dangerfield Syrah 2017

By , 18 September 2020

This Syrah gets its name from a character in one of the late Raoul Beaumont’s favourite novels The Ginger Man written by JP Donleavy. When current winemaker Sebastian was born his parents Jayne and Raoul tried to use it as a middle name for him but the grandparents vetoed the decision. Now this wine bears the name.

The 2017 involved some 30% whole bunch fermentation before maturation lasting 20 months in French oak, 25% new. The nose shows notes of blackberries, a hint of lavender, earth, pepper and other spice while the palate shows dense fruit, moderate acidity and firm tannins. Surprisingly full given a modest alcohol of 13.18%. Price: R225 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
