How much to expect from a red in a clear glass bottle costing just R105 a bottle? The wine in question is the Fairview Grenache Noir 2021 and it completely over-delivers.

Grapes from vineyards on the Fairview farm in Paarl ranging in age from 10 to 14 years as well as a 1973 Piekenierskloof site, vinfication involved fermentation in foudre with some whole-bunches put at the bottom for elevated fruit and finer tannin, while maturation lasted nine months in older oak.

The nose shows rose, red berries and fynbos while the palate has fabulous fruit purity and energy – juicy and fresh with fine tannins, the finish persistent and dry. Light but not weak.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
