Mosi Wines is the brand belonging to Joseph Dhafana, sommelier at acclaimed Cape Town restaurant La Colombe, his most recent achievement being recognised for wine service at last year’s Eat Out Mercedes Benz Restaurant Awards.

After spending time with various Swartland winemakers, particularly Chris Mullineux of Mullineux Family Wines, Dhafana oversaw his first vintage in 2014. Current releases are the Tinashe Chenin Blanc 2019 named after his son and Flavian Syrah 2018 named after his late father. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:

Mosi Tinashe Chenin Blanc 2019
Price: R170
Grapes from two Swartland vineyards, one on granite and the other on shale. Spontaneously fermented and matured for 12 months in older oak. A complex nose with a top note of potpourri before naartjie, apple and stone fruit plus spice and some yeasty character in the background. Very good fruit concentration matched by zesty acidity on the palate. Layered and long, this is well worth seeking out.

CE’s rating: 92/100.

Mosi Flavian Syrah 2018
Price: R190
Grapes from a vineyard planted on shale near Riebeek Kasteel. Whole-bunch fermented and matured for 18 months in first-, second- and third fill barrels. Very primary on the nose with plenty of red and blackberries plus a little floral perfume and white pepper while the palate is fairly bursting with fruit, the tannins quite soft. Alcohol is 14% and this would have probably benefited from a slightly earlier harvest.

CE’s rating: 88/100.
