Weather Report Atlas 2020

By , 27 September 2022

Chris Keet Jnr, nephew of Chris Keet of Keet Wines, is viticulturist at Gabriëlskloof in Bot River but also makes a wine called Atlas under his own Weather Report label.

Latest release is 2020, which he terms “a snapshot of the Cape through the medium of Cabernet Franc”. The wine incorporates grapes from two vineyards in Elgin as well Joostenberg Vlakte, Wellington and Gabriëlskloof itself.

Winemaking involves some 50% whole-bunch fermentation before maturation in older oak. The nose shows red and black berries plus floral perfume while the palate has good fruit density, bright acidity and well-managed tannins. Medium bodied, well balanced and quite charming. Price: R235 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
