Welgegund Single Vineyard Cinsault 2017
By Christian Eedes, 23 November 2018
The Single Vineyard Cinsault 2017 from Wellington property Welgegund comes from a 1974 vineyard, the bottle duly bearing Certified Heritage Vineyard credentials. Matured in older oak for 14 months, the nose shows raspberry, red and black cherry, dried herbs, a touch of liquourice, earth and spice. The palate has plenty of grunt (alcohol is 14%) but it’s not unduly sweet – instead, it shows plenty of juicy fruit, particularly tangy (added?) acidity and pleasantly grippy tannins. Price: R330 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 91/100.
