Weltevrede new releases
By Christian Eedes, 4 October 2023
Weltevrede, situated outside Bonnievale in the Roberston valley, has long been associated with high-quality bubbly, the Philip Jonker Brut 1999, for instance, judged best overall at the Amorim Cap Classique Challenge in 2003, only the second time this competition had been held.
The property recently launched two new versions of Cap Classique, namely Philip Jonker Rosetta Rosé NV and Philip Jonker Nectar Demi-Sec 2014. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:
Philip Jonker Rosetta Rosé NV
Price: R189
60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir. A minimum of 12 months on the lees. Raspberry, strawberry, orange, liquorice, spice and earth on the nose. The palate has big volume – rich and round with tangy acidity and a creamy mouuse, the finish gently savoury. Alc: 12.47%.
CE’s rating: 91/100.
Philip Jonker Nectar Demi-Sec 2014
Price: R249
100% Chardonnay. Extra long lees maturation. Citrus, apple, baked bread, honey, spice and some leesy complexity on the nose. Dense fruit to go with a soft and creamy mousse and a gently savoury finish – alcohol is 11.96% and it carries its 40g/l of residual sugar very well, which is to say it doesn’t come across as sickly sweet as so many other examples of Demi-Sec do.
CE’s rating: 90/100.
