The new Signature Series range of wines from retailer Woolworths sees consultant Allan Mullins collaborating with some of the top names in the wine industry. There are six wines in all, tasting notes and ratings as follows:

Signature Series Sauvignon Blanc 2017 by Duncan Savage (Savage wines)
Price: R129.99
Includes a dash of Semillon. Some reduction before lime and green apple plus some fynbos on the nose. Not too full-bodied despite an alcohol of 14% – pure fruit, fresh acidity and a savoury finish.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.

Woolworths Signature Series Chenin Blanc 2016

Up there with the best.

Signature Series Chenin Blanc 2016 by RJ Botha and Alistair Rimmer (Klein Zalze)
Price: R129.99
Matured in old, large oak barrels for eight months. Wonderfully complex nose showing apple, stone fruit, even a little pineapple plus vanilla pod, spice and some earthiness. Excellent fruit concentration, mouthcoating but not unctuous, the finish long and savoury.

Editor’s rating: 94/100.

Signature Series Chardonnay 2016 by Danie De Wet (De Wetshof)
Price: R129.99
Matured for 12 months in first, second and third fill barrels. A subtle nose showing some blossom before pear, white peach and citrus plus a little reduction. Medium bodied with racy acidity and a bone-dry finish. A sophisticated drop.

Editor’s rating: 92/100.

Signature Series Shiraz 2015 by Carl van der Merwe (De Morgenzon)
Price: R159.99
Matured in small oak barrels for 12 months and in larger ones for a further eight months. A heady nose of red and black fruit, lavender, pepper plus pleasant oak-derived notes of vanilla and spice and a little reduction. The palate is rich and smooth-textured – dense fruit, moderate acidity and soft tannins. A crowd-pleaser.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.

Signature Series Merlot 2015 by Frans Smit (Spier)
Price: R159.99
50% matured for 18 months in new French oak barrels. Top notes of fynbos and violets before red and black fruit, oyster shell and rather too much oak. Medium bodied with fresh acidity and fine tannins. Likeable but not perhaps a bit insubstantial/lacking in mid-palate.

Editor’s rating: 89/100.

Signature Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 by Gyles Webb (Thelema)
Price: R159.99
Matured in French oak barrels, 50% new. A herbal top note before red fruit and some turned earth character. Medium bodied with fresh acidity and fine tannins, the finish having a pleasant coolness to it. Elegant and restrained.

Editor’s rating: 90/100.
