Smacks of the sea.

Merlot, Merlot, Merlot. What are we going to do with you? The Unfiltered Merlot 2009 from Fleur du Cap (R110 a bottle) shows a distinct “oyster shell” character on the nose while the palate is medium bodied with red fruit, fresh acidity and fine, spicy tannins. The overall impression is of a lean, rather savoury wine not unappealing but not nearly as rich and round as most would hope for from a premium example of the variety. Score: 15.5/20.
