Mullineux Mourvèdre 2013

Mourvèdre lite.

Though widely grown in the more Mediterranean parts of France and Spain, Mourvèdre is never going to be massively popular. It needs a hot, dry climate for it is very late ripening and it typically makes rather potent, somewhat gamey wines.

The Mourvèdre 2013 which Swartland producer Mullineux offered to its club members defies the odds by being quite handsome and easy to drink. Fermentation 100% whole-bunch and maturation lasting 11 months in old French oak, it shows dark cherry, scrub and spice on the nose while the palate is pure, fresh and remarkably light. Poised and precise as you’d expect from this cellar. Wine club price: R157.25 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 90/100.
