Off the Record new releases

Bobby Wallace placed Top 10 in the iTOO Next Generation Awards earlier this year for the 2023 vintage of his Off the Record Chenin Blanc which rated 94 points. He started his own label while winemaker at Elgin cellar Iona which required some discretion and hence the name. Tasting notes for his new releases as follows:

Chenin Blanc 2024
Price: R280

Grapes from Casey’s Ridge in Elgin. Matured for 10 months in 300-litre barrels, 18% new. Pretty aromatics including pear, peach, citrus, floral perfume and a hint of reduction. The palate shows pure fruit and unobtrusive acidity before a gently savoury finish. Light-bodied and understated. Alc: 12.95%.

Syrah 2023
Price: R330
90% Ceres Plateau, 10% Elgin. Stems added back, matured for nine months in old 500-litre barrels. Evocative aromatics of red berries, flowers, herbs and white pepper while the palate is precise and vibrant – pure fruit, snappy lemon-like acidity, and ultra-fine tannins. A wine that grows more accomplished with each vintage.  Alc: 12.9%.
