Intellego Kedungu 2019

Kedungu, the red blend from Jurgen Gouws of Intellego, has always been likeable if unreservedly new wave in style and now that Mourvèdre has replaced Syrah as the lead variety for the first time in the newly released 2019 vintage, it’s more compelling than ever.

With Mourvèdre at 60%, the rest of the blend is made up of 26% Cinsault and 14% Syrah. The nose is very expressive with notes of lavender, herbs, dark berries and a hint of meatiness that Mourvèdre often lends, wild but not dirty. The palate, meanwhile, has lovely pure fruit, arresting acidity and nicely grippy tannins. It’s an exciting glass of wine. Price: R145 a bottle.
