Old vine Swartland Chenin Blanc for R145 a bottle? Count me in. Grapes for this come from a 1981 vineyard on Hugo Carinus’s Swartland farm, winemaking by the acclaimed Lukas van Loggerenberg. The 2020 shows some not unpleasant leesy reduction before citrus and peach while the palate has good texture and weight given an alcohol of just 12.5%, the acidity nicely integrated, the finish savoury, even slightly bitter – it all makes for characterful and rewarding drop.

Delivers great value for money every year, both the Chenin and Syrah. A firm favourite (not least because, well, Lukas!)
