Wham, bam, thank you Sam.

Wham, bam, thank you Sam.

The Syrah 2014 from Greyton property is breath-taking. Involving 40% whole-bunch fermentation, winemaker Samantha O’Keefe initially put the wine into barrique but anxious that she would lose the wine’s perfume, almost immediately transferred it to a 3 000-litre vat, where it matured for six months.

It shows red and black fruit, fynbos, white pepper and a particular coriander seed note. Pure and fresh with lovely fine tannins – small but perfectly formed, as they say. Price: R200 a bottle.

Winemag rating: 95/100.
