Mullineux Syrah 2016, Mullineux Syrah 2016

Something for the weekend.

The three Single Terroir examples of Syrah from Mullineux – Granite, Iron and Schist – are very, very good (see reviews of the 2016s here) but at just under R1000 a bottle, they are going to be out of reach for a lot of people. The standard label is not exactly everyday drinking at R325 a bottle from Wine Cellar but a dinner party with good friends should suffice as an excuse to open it.

Grapes from seven different vineyards planted on various soils across the Swartland, winemaking involved spontaneous fermentation of whole bunches before maturation lasting 14 months in 225- and 500-litre barrels plus 2 000-litre foudre, 15% new.

The nose is super-fragrant with notes of red fruit, rose, lavender, fynbos, white pepper and spice. The palate is juicy and fresh with fine tannins, the finish long and gently savoury. It’s a pretty damn sexy drop. Alcohol: 13.5%.

Editor’s rating: 92/100.

Simple question; is it better than Boekenhoutskloof Syrah?

Answer: after looking a bit further back, I find the 2016 Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2016 at R495 per bottle getting 95/100 from Christian. I know that people in SA and in the UK complain about getting a good allocation, and occasionally about the price, but at half the cost of the above, my cellar has a long vertical of Boekenhoutskloof Syrah, which always shows well on special occasions versus all comers. The only big miss I’ve ever had, was at a dinner party I hosted with an Australian friend of mine, when I put the 2008 up against Penfolds Grange 2000. But hey-ho, the Grange was ten times the price of the Boekenhoutskloof Syrah at the time.
