Johann van Eck, a medical doctor based in Worcester, is a keen part-time winemaker and also part of the seven-person committee which relaunched the Garagiste Movement in South Africa earlier this year.

He currently has five wines available, the pick of which is the Catherina Sauvignon Blanc 2014, fermentation begun in tank and finished in a third-fill 300-litre barrel, maturation lasting nine months.

It shows subtle notes of black currant, cut apple, grapefruit and granadilla plus some yeasty complexity. The acidity is moderate and it’s a nicely mellow drink all around.

Winemag rating: 88/100.
