Ashbourne Sandstone 2006

By , 27 January 2013

Sauvignon. With a twist.

Although maiden vintage Sandstone 2006 from Anthony Hamilton Russell venture Ashbourne contains 30% Chardonnay and 10% barrel fermented Semillon, it’s the major component Sauvignon Blanc that seems to dominate now. Lots of lime, lemon and herbal notes on nose and palate. Okay, the wine is remarkably intact for its age (only a very slight nuttiness creeping in on the finish) and has more texture than you might expect from a straight South African Sauvignon but you kinda wish that the flavour spectrum was a bit broader and more intricate. Score: 16/20.
