Beaumont Vitruvian 2008

By , 22 June 2012

If you’re not inclined to be confined by convention, then why not a blend of 38% Mourvèdre,27% Pinotage, 12% Petit Verdot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 11% Shiraz? The 2008 is the current release of the flagship red (R280 a bottle) from Bot River property Beaumont and though it seems off the wall, it really works as an assemblage. Notes of red and black fruit, fynbos and spice on the nose and palate. Great concentration, fresh acidity and firm but fine tannins. It’s full bodied but not at all unwieldy. Matured for 25 months in 400-litre barrels, 35 months. Score: 17/20.
